Caldew bridge is a 3 span viaduct of the railway and river Caldew and is part of the Carlisle Southern link road project.
The bridge consists of 18 no beams the majority are 55-65m in length, 5m in height and each weight over 70tonnes. These beams are fabricated out of 30-55mm thick structural steel plate. The project was particularly tricky due to the bridge not only crossing a river but also a railway line. Works had to be carried out during the night, whilst the line was isolated. The bridge spans were laid out in an assemble area where they were built into ready made sections and carried to the installation crane on Self propelled modular trailer (SPMT’S) . For our lifting operations we utilised a Liebherr LR11350 crane which is one of the largest crawler cranes in the UK with lifting capacity of 13507 at 12m. Once complete the crossing will measure over 170m in length and stand 20m in height over the river.
