The new Velindre Hospital access Bridge is a single span composite ladder beam type plate girder bridge structure made from Weathering Grade steel plate

Testing & inspection to quantified service fatigue category F56 in accordance with PD6705-2 2010+A1:2013

Execution Class 3 BSEN1090-2 2018

The new bridge is required to provide a new access road from the north, off Longwood Drive and to the proposed new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) located approximately 250m north west of the existing VCC.

J&D Pierce provided collaborative ECI advice and information to assist the designer to finalise the steelwork detail design and Bearing selection.

The pre-cambers, high skew and at the abutment ends and the longitudinal elevation fall add complexities to the geometrical profiles at the Bearing Stiffeners and Diaphragm connections that need careful planning and consideration by our Project and in-house Design team to ensure fit-up and stability at every stage of the erection sequence.

The new bridge will be fabricated at our J&D Pierce / Strubeam facility at East Kilbride.

The two main girders will each be delivered to site in 3No. sections;

2 @ 11.5m long weighing 22Te. and 1 @ 33.3m long, weighing 62Te.

Assembled into full length girders 56.3m long and weighing 112Te. the main girders will be transported from the assembly location to the abutment location and crane pad on SPMT’s.

The installation of the main girders will utilise the Terex/Demag TC2800 strut jib mobile truck crane.
